Bob Dylan, the American singer-songwriter whose work documents the musical history and political struggles of his country, has been awarded the 2016 Nobel Prize for Literature.

The Swedish Academy announced early this morning that Dylan was receiving the award ‘for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song traditions’.

Nobel buzz has surrounded Dylan since the early 1990s, when his close friend and occasional collaborator, Allen Ginsberg, first advocated he receive the prize.
