Independence Day was an iconic film when it hit cinemas in 1996. There’s no real surprise that a sequel is due to hit cinemas – the only surprise is how long it’s taken.
Obviously, things have to be bigger and better, with even more CGI. That’s the nature of the beast.
It looks like the aliens are back and causing havoc, but the humans have some weapons of their own spurred on by recovered alien technology.
The film stars returning cast Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox and Brent Spiner. They’re joined by William Fichtner, Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, Angelababy, Joey King and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Rumours say that there will be a prominent LGBT character, and that Will Smith was killed off because they couldn’t afford his $50 million fee. His widow and step-son return, however.
Independence Day 2: Resurgence is released 24 June 2016.
