FIVE SONGS YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT.
1- Rihanna ft. Mikky Ekko – Stay (Bass King vs. X-Vertigo Remix)
Leading the pack this week is (probably) the biggest entertainer in the world right now, Rihanna. Her seventh studio album, Unapologetic, has so far been a bit lacklustre for me, with recent single, ‘Stay’, being particularly slow. However, the remixes have started to pour in, breathing some life into it. It’s led by this bootleg remix by Bass King and X-Vertigo. Championed by Radio 1 DJ, Danny Howard, they’re pushing for an official release through Def Jam records. I’m almost inclined to label this a part two to the monster that was ‘We Found Love’, due to its soulful verses and Calvin Harris-like explosive riffs.
2- Justin Timberlake ft. Jay-Z – Suit & Tie
Possibly the most talked about track of the week, Justin Timberlake returns with his first single in 6 years. Don’t be put off on first listen. This defines the “grower” tune, channelling jazz and soul with its 20s style horns, and delicate vocals, comparable to Robin Thicke. It’s full of charm, though far from faultless. The intro is a slow, unnecessary and ill-fitting section to the song, and the usually charismatic Jay-Z adds little. The song needs something to break it up in the middle. I would have been more in favour of an instrumental sax section.
3- Pink ft. Lily Rose Cooper – True Love
Pink recently announced that the third single released from her latest album will be ‘Just Give Me A Reason’. Not satisfied with that, here begins my campaign for fan favourite, ‘True Love’. Lyrically she’s hardly breaking new ground as we’ve heard this all before on ‘Leave Me Alone (I’m Lonely)’ where she equally questions her opposing feelings towards a lover. This song is fun, cute, and not to be taken too seriously, thanks partly to an appearance by the ever-cheeky and much missed Lily Allen, who now goes by her married name, Lily Rose Cooper.
4- V Bozeman – Poison
V Bozeman is the protégé of R&B singer Cee-Lo Green and after releasing several performance videos through her YouTube account, she looks to be on the verge of a breakthrough with new single, ‘Poison’. With its colourful video and quickfire delivery, V succeeds in making the song quirky and stylish enough to make you notice it instantly. Think Outkast and VV Brown in a blender.
5- A*M*E – Heartless
A name to watch out for this year, 18 year old Sierra Leone born, Aminata Kabba, known as A*M*E has recently been signed to Gary Barlow’s record label, Future Records. Fresh from appearing on tour with Aiden Grimshaw and her nomination for the BBC sound of 2013 poll, A*M*E proves her worth with, Heartless, the perfect teen pop song: loud, feisty and catchy without crossing over into bratty territory.
