FIVE SONGS YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT.
1- Duke Dumont ft. A*M*E – Need U (100%)
Starting this week with a big club track for anyone that’s been partying outside of the gay scene. UK Producer and DJ Duke Dumont has been making some noise with a track that looks set to be his first to cross into the mainstream. ‘Need U (100%)’ continues what is becoming quite an exciting direction for dance music at the moment, with 90s synths and soulful vocals (provided by upcoming UK singer A*M*E). It’s in a similar vein to previous songs I have championed such as Tensnake’s ‘Mainline’ and Hot Natured’s ‘Benediction’.
2- Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding – I Need Your Love
When recently finding a rare moment to listen to some commercial radio, I found Calvin Harris to become quite inescapable. His tracks blasted out back to back, if not his own releases, then tracks he recently produced for Cheryl Cole, Rihanna or Chris Brown. He really has a stronghold on the sound of right now, and that looks set to continue with the release of his next single, ‘I Need Your Love’. As we reach a point where almost every track from 18 Months has been released as a single, it’s a wonder this one, featuring vocals from ever-popular Ellie Goulding has been left this late, unless for a final punch before bowing out to this era. It features all the usual drops and twinkly bits that have become a must in Calvin’s signature sound.
3- Taylor Swift – Begin Again
America’s Sweetheart, Taylor Swift has been enjoying increasing success this side of the pond since being revamped into a teeny-pop star from a Country singer. That’s all well and good, and some experimentation is always welcomed by me, but Taylor’s transformation from Country to Dubstep hasn’t quite felt as authentic as when Opera singer, Charlotte Church tried her hand at Doo-Wop Pop. ‘Begin Again’, on the other hand takes Taylor back to her roots. It’s a cutesy love song with plucked strings twanging in the traditional fashion.
4 – The Cataracs ft. SkyBlu – Alcohol
You may remember a time a couple of years ago when you couldn’t escape a dancefloor without the overheard sounds of the words “It’s The Cataraaaaacs”. They were the producers behind hits like Snoop Dogg’s ‘Wet’, Far East Movement’s ‘Like A G6’ and Dev’s ‘Bass Down Low’. Now they’re back with the first single from their new EP Gordo Taqueria. It features LMFAO rapper, SkyBlu and thus expectedly features some comedic one-liners and a heavy party rocking baseline. The extra bonus for me with this one, is that the song’s subject matter is something quite close to my heart.
5 – AlunaGeorge – Diver
Hotly tipped for big things this year, vocal/production duo and Radio 1 darlings, AlunaGeorge try their luck with the third release from their forthcoming debut album, Body Music. So far they’ve managed just one top 50 hit, but thanks to a recent feature on the Disclosure monster-hit ‘White Noise’ which has already peaked at #2 in the UK charts, they could finally score a hit of their own with this one. It’s a slow moving track with some electronic elements, as sassy as an R&B release, simpler than a Garage track but not as chilled as trip hop so almost impossible to put this one in a box.
