According to producers, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 is set to feature a new superhero: tormented biker Ghost Rider. But producers have hinted that the supposedly magical origins of the character will have a scientific basis.

‘It started out with a guy building a suit using science, and then we met aliens that are the origin of the myths behind some of our gods, and this year Doctor Strange comes out,’ said Jed Whedon to Entertainment Weekly.

‘We’re opening it up even further to the world of things we don’t totally understand, or as Thor says, “Magic is science that we don’t understand.” Well, we’re getting into some very, very fancy science.’

Adding to the drama, Maurissa Tancharoen said, ‘Our team will definitely be trying to science this guy with the flaming skull.’

The Season 4 premiere is titled ‘The Ghost’. In-keeping with comicbook canon, it’ll be the latest version of the Rider, Robbie Reyes, who appears (see above for Gabriel Luna playing Robbie in everyday clothes). Like the comics, Robbie has traded in the iconic motorbike for a 1969 Dodge Charger, also known as the Hell Charger.

‘We picked Robbie, actually, because our show, at the end of day, is always about family,’ said head of Marvel TV Loeb. ‘And the fact that Robbie’s relationship with [his brother] Gabe is so much a part of his character, and the world of east L.A., which is not a place that we’ve ever gone to in the Marvel Universe, was just a really exciting way.’

It seems the Ghost Rider will also be joined by two more superheroes: Jason O’Mara’s identity hasn’t yet been revealed, but Aida (Mallory Jansen) is set to be the show’s first Life-Model Decoy.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 4 hits the small screen later this month, where Gabriel Luna will play Ghost Rider.
