In news that is set to please LGBT+ Whovians everywhere, it has been announced that Madame Vastra and her wife and sidekick Jenny are set to share a kissin the first episode of the new series of Doctor Who.

The new episode, titled ‘Deep Breath’, will see the return of Vastra and Jenny to the narrative as played by actresses Neve Mackintosh and Catrin Stewart. The characters have been a mainstay of the BBC science fiction show since 2011 when they, along with their amusing friend Strax, were recruited by the Doctor in the episode ‘A Good Man Goes to War’.

While the show had featured LGBT+ relationships in the past this was the first time it featured a lesbian relationship and indeed a female same-sex kiss.

The characters have gone on to become a fan hit and have appeared in multiple episodes featuring Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor, combining humour and general ‘bad-assery’ and securing them a multiple starring roles similar to Alex Kingston’s time as River Song.

The new series of Doctor Who featuring Peter Capaldi as the latest incarnation of the Doctor is set to premiere on 23 August 2014 on BBC One.
