14 Epic Moments from the Game of Thrones Season 4 Trailer

Latest posts by Barry Quinn (see all)

Game of Thrones Season 4 begins in America on April 6th and a day later in the UK. On Monday, after a couple of days worth of teasing, HBO released an epic trailer, and Game of Thrones fans across the world rejoiced.

There were MANY exciting shots in the trailer, but I’ve managed to pick out my top 14. As a fan of the books, I know what to expect, but I know that there are a lot of people that only watch the show so I’ll try not to spoil too much.

But, as always, minor spoilers to follow.

1.    Dragons in… Where?!

Dragons

The first seconds of the trailer showed us a now customary cinematic shot of Dany’s dragons sweeping over a city, with an incredible wingspan. But where was Dany’s dragon flying? To me, and a lot of others online, it looks like King’s Landing, but surely not. It just can’t be. Can it? If it was, then this surely has to be the final shot of the season, but then I always thought that the final shot of season 4 would be the obvious one (book fans, you know what I’m referring to).

2.    A Feast For Crows

A Feast For Crows

Season 4 incorporates elements of the second half of A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows and the first half of A Dance with Dragons as it deviates somewhat from its source material. We were greeted with a poignant shot of a crow feasting from a fallen soldier, a visual and striking reference to the book of the same name.

3.    Tyrion’s on Trial (Again!)

Tyrion on Trial Again

If you read the books, you’ll know why. If you don’t, you can probably guess why. Tyrion’s on trial again. Is it for murder, treason, or just because Cersei hates his guts?

4.    The Wall is Breached

Wildlings Breaching The Wall

“If the wildlings breach the wall they’ll roll over everything and everyone” Jon declares as we see shots of the wildlings making their way through the wall, closely to be followed by…

5.    GIANTS!

Giants

More quick shots of giants, following their formal introduction in the first few episodes of season 3. The CGI elements of these shots are looking very impressive!

6.    A Golden Hand

A Golden Hand - Jaime Lannister

Who can forget Jaime losing his hand last season? It was one of those scenes where the viewer physically recoiled in horror. I did, and I knew what to expect. But this season will see Jaime gain a new hand, made of gold. Expect laughs aplenty as he tries to get used to it, as well as anguish and anger as he can’t muster his new appendage. But it’s going to be impressive to watch regardless.

7.    The Red Viper Vs. The Mountain

The Red Viper Vs The Mountain

If you don’t read the books, here’s a little background info: The Red Viper (otherwise known as Oberyn Martell), one of the many Martell characters to be introduced in Season Four (also expect to see the fantastic Indira Varma as Ellaria Sand), stands as Tyrion’s champion in a trial by combat after Tyrion is arrested. And who’s his adversary? The Mountain (otherwise known as Gregor Clegane, The Hound’s brother). The Mountain has been recast (again!) but the fight is going to be exciting to behold.

8.    Joffrey’s Wedding

Joffreys Wedding

After last season’s slaughter (otherwise known as the Red Wedding) expect a more sombre affair as Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell get married. This is going to happen halfway through the season, I predict, and its outcome will have severe repercussions for numerous characters throughout the remainder of the show.

9.    Twincest!

Jaime and Cersei - More Twincest

At the close of season 3 Cersei and Jaime had just been reunited, so expect more hot (and illegal, I might add!) sex, as well as fights, bitching and snarky comments from the Queen of Snark. Did I mention she was snarky?

10.  The Night’s Watch VS. The Wildlings

The Nights Watch Vs The Wildlings

Another season, another epic battle. The Battle of Blackwater (season 2) was one of the most impressive hours of television I have ever seen and it was entirely based around the siege that befell King’s Landing. Will this battle be as epic? It mostly happens off-page in the books, so perhaps expect a similar outcome in the show.

11. Yara (Asha) and Theon (Dickless) Greyjoy

Yara And Theon Greyjoy

Two of my favourite characters in the books and the show. Yara Greyjoy (named Asha in the books but renamed in the show to avoid confusion with Osha the wildling) is on the warpath and on the lookout for her brother Theon, who we last saw having his dick gruesomely removed by Ramsay Snow. Expect them to be reunited, and on the lookout for revenge.

12.  Badass (it’s about time!) Arya

Badass Arya Stark

Arya’s transformation in the books is one of the many highlights of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, and we can expect to see it begin in this season. Arya transforms from a pushover kid with an attitude into a ruthless silent assassin. But first she has to escape from The Hound. She’s caught between a rock and a hard place…

13.  Another (!) Epic Dany Speech

13 - Another Epic Dany Speech

Aside from her dragons, Daenerys Targaryen (the name I also christened my car) is well known for her numerous epic speeches as she defies her opponents. We last saw her freeing the slaves of Yunkai and this season will see her travel to Meereen and announce “They have a choice: They can live in my new world or die in their old one.” She’s one badass motherfucker, but love is coming her way… Oh, and betrayal.

14. Stannis to the rescue!

Stannis Baratheon

Stannis Baratheon reaches The Wall in the battle against the wildlings, but is it too late? You’ll have to watch the new season to find out, but expect to see a culmination in the Night’s Watch and the wildlings fight. For now.
