In a story that sounds like it belongs in the Onion, Dr Patrick Johnson, a conservative activist, is advocating that Ohio pass legislation to ban breast feeding in public because he feels it encourages gay pride.
Johnson finds the act of breastfeeding – has been part of the nurturing bond between a mother and child for the majority of human existence – to be offensive when done in public.
‘I think when we allow women to flaunt their sexuality in public, flaunt their nudity to the public, it’s harmful to marriage,’ Johnson stated. ‘What they did was an offense to God, was an offense to the public morality, and the legislature should act to criminalize what they did.’
Breastfeeding in public has been a topic of recent debate, often focusing on the fact that there is a chance that men or children will be exposed to the sight of a breast. Much of the objection to public breastfeeding comes from the assumption that breasts are inherently sexual and inappropriate in public places.
Johnson not only objects to the idea of a woman nursing her child in public because of the nudity factor, but also because he feels that it promotes the popularity of gay pride events.
‘The gay pride parade in Columbus is 500,000 strong – why? Because the women go topless. This is the only one where I’ve seen this level of nudity.’
No word as yet if Johnson would also like to ban men from showing their breast tissue (or ‘pectorals’) in public, to prevent children from being exposed to men ‘flaunting’ their sexuality in public.
If the ban were to pass, it would make Ohio the first state to officially ban breastfeeding in public.
