Laverne Cox, best known for her role on the Netflix show Orange is the New Black, has become the first transgender person to model for a wax figure of themselves at Madame Tussauds.

‘When I think about being who I am, a black trans woman from a working class background raised in Mobile, Alabama, this honour feels even more improbable and extraordinary,’ Cox said. ‘I am so deeply honoured to have been asked to be part of the Madame Tussauds legacy.’

‘I hope that this will be a source of inspiration for every one who encounters it to believe that their dreams matter and are possible.’

Cox has appeared in several films and TV shows , including Law & Order, Bored to Death and TRANSform Me (which she hosted, making her the first African-American trans woman to star in her own TV show) before being cast as Sophia Burset in Orange is the New Black. Cox has used her star-power to promote awareness of transgender issues and was featured on the iconic cover of Time magazine’s 9 June 2014 issue, ‘The Transgender Tipping Point’. She will appear in the upcoming third season of Orange is the New Black, which is set to debut on 12 June.
