Restaurant review: Zia Lucia, Chelsea – London

Pizzeria Zia Lucia opened its eleventh site in Chelsea (Fulham Broadway) earlier in July, bringing its neighbourhood vibe and good value pizzas within a minute’s walk of the local tube station. We have previously reviewed the Aldgate East branch (review here) and the Hammersmith branch (review here) so were keen to see what’s consistent and what’s new.

Zia Lucia Chelsea

Located a moment from Fulham Broadway tube station, the Zia Lucia Chelsea restaurant has capacity for 46-covers including al-fresco seating. The terracotta tiles set off a warming and homely feel around the kitchen, set off by the cerulean blue pizza oven – a long way from those Oscar de la Renta  owns of 2002, mentioned by Miranda Priestley.

On arrival we were seated immediately and shortly after the restaurant gradually filled up. On our Wednesday evening there were a couple of wait staff working, including a spritely, young American guy with whom we laughed over miscommunication over our different accents – the garlic dip was for a bowl not our balls. Starters arrived within a couple of minutes and pizzas were timed to arrive promptly after – so we had a smooth service throughout our meal.

The menu

The menu remains consistent across all venues, with a choice of four dough bases (traditional, wholemeal, gluten-free or charcoal) all slow fermented for 48-hours, and then a selection of predefined toppings, which have evolved since our last review, including the local limited edition option.

We started with olive verdi (£4.50) and a caprese salad (£7.50) – both simple and light, as expected. Ideal before a heavier pizza-based main course.
For main courses we chose one topping from the ‘legendary’ pun-filled section and one from the regular selection. Our pun-ful choice was the Leonardo da Vin-Cheese pizza (£15.30) made with fiordilatte mozzarella, gorgonzola, parmigiano, ricotta, homemade orange jam & fresh mint leaves – the orange jam may seem unusual, but mades for a delicious sweet and sticky contrast to the salty cheese. Another legendary pizza we would like to try next time is Arianna Sbagliata. Our other choice was the burrata & parma ham pizza (£14.95) on a charcoal base with garlic dip (£2.50) was simple and delicious.

Although rather full, we did guard a little room for dessert, so we opted for a scoop of lemon sorbet (£3.95) and a couple of ice cream scoops (pistachio and vanilla) (£7) – perfect for a balmy summer’s evening and we were impressed by the flavour and smoothness of the pistachio ice cream.

For drinks, given the warm weather outside, we opted for a couple of spritzes (Hugo – with elderflower, and Aperol), about £8.50 each.

Overall thoughts

The quality of the pizzas was just as we remembered them from previous review – so definitely a venue to check out for local pizza lovers in the Chelsea area, and the brand remains one of our favourite pizzerias in London. The price point remains very reasonable for London, so a good option for those on a budget. Our service was fun and friendly, and honest – the ‘limited edition’ blackboard was brought over to us so we could see it.

Zia Lucia founders Gianluca D’Angelo and Claudio Vescovo have continued their success from their original venue in Islington in 2016; from the service, pizza offering, and location, we see the Chelsea branch being just as successful.

Zia Lucia Chelsea is located at 49 Fulham Road, London, SW6 1AE
