Those of us who have seen the film Pride will be aware of Lesbians & Gays Support the Miners. Nicola Field, one of the original members of LGSM, immortalised in the film, is currently crowdfunding to republish her seminal book about LGBT activism called Over the Rainbow: Money, Class and Homophobia.
Rooted in a class-based approach to campaigning, Field’s book is a much needed antidote to the consumerism and sloganeering of the mainstream LGBT rights movement. As Field and other socialist activists have pointed out, the current movement, in order to win important rights, positioned LGBT people as ‘maginalised consumers’ in a capitalist society. The result was several wins for equality, but at the expense of focusing on the Pink Pound and heternormativity over the right to be different.
By bringing Over the Rainbow back into print, Field hopes to reinvigorate discussions around class politics, and how dismantling oppression often means dismantling the system itself.
You can watch Nicola’s pitch for the crowdfunder below, or you can support the project over at Indiegogo.
