Yes, the latest in a long and esteemed line of designers to create collections for H&M was revealed last Saturday to be the boy wonder Alexander Wang.
The Californian-born designer has, at 30, achieved more than most do in a lifetime. Running not only a hugely successful eponymous mainline, but also a diffusion line – T by Alexander Wang – he somehow fits in being the creative director of Balenciaga around these. His success has been cemented ever since he showed his first collection way back in 2007. He has since won no less than seven awards, including the highly prestigious CFDA Fashion Fund Award and GQ US’s Best Menswear Designer of the Year Award in 2011.
And now Wang has followed in the footsteps of some of the other fashion super-brands and will be designing a collection that will appear in stores this coming November. H&M’s creative advisor, Margareta Van Den Bosch commented:
“The New York based Fashion Designer’s eponymous brand has firmly established itself by perpetually evolving and re-contextualising the urban uniform […] Alexander Wang is one of the most important voices in fashion today. He understands exactly what people want to wear and does it with an energy and passion that’s infectious. It feels incredible to be collaborating with him this year.”
So what can we expect from the upcoming collection? Speculation is rife but educated guesses would suggest that it will be a selection of vibrant street-wear with modern urban motifs, far flung from the structural refinement of his Balenciaga collections, but miles more fun.
And great news for you guys out there! This is going to be one of those rare fashion collaborations that will include menswear offerings, as well as accessories. Hurrah! If it’s anywhere near the quality of his past collections, it’s going to be one definitely not to miss, and you know what that means, it’s going to be damn near impossible to actually get hold of any of it unless you camp outside one of the Oxford Street stores for about a week.
So how do us normal people get a piece of the action? H&M will be stocking the collection in 250 stores worldwide, which makes the chances of the collection coming to a store near you much higher! Sharpen your elbows and have your fists at the ready – it’s going to be a war-zone out there come November.
