Hotel and restaurant review: The Horseshoe Inn, Peebles

Adam Lowe

The Horseshoe Inn is an exciting country restaurant and guesthouse in Peebles (about 30 minutes’ drive from Edinburgh). Although able to house only 10 diners in the restaurant (with 14 more in the private dining room), plus eight people at a time in the next door School House, The Horseshoe focuses on offering a bespoke, high-quality experience for those who visit.

Let’s start with the restaurant. Listed in the Michelin Guide, AA Restaurant Guide and Stevenson’s Scotland’s Good Hotel and Food Guide, the restaurant has two AA rosettes and a 4 Gold Star rating in the AA Guide. Lunch and dinner is available in the restaurant from Wednesday to Sunday.

The table service is excellent. The staff were all charming and offered a very high-class, but low-key service – they were attentive but not fussy, friendly but not intrusive. We tried an ambitious and genuinely creative tasting menu.

Complementing the restaurant is a gorgeous lounge with a traditional atmosphere – featuring chesterfields, a wood burning stove, grand sofas and a fine wooden bar. Here pre-dinner drinks are served – with a drinks menu that favours quality and offers a unique taste of Scotland. There are a number of gins, for instance, from Scottish distilleries, a dozen wines served by the glass, Delamotte Grand Cru Champagne by the glass, eight more champagnes served by the half-bottle, a wide range of malt whiskies and grower-bottled Cognacs and Armagnacs.

The rooms are comfy with en suite showers, handmade organic toiletries, bathrobes, and all the usual extras (tea, coffee, fresh milk, fruit and even homemade cake). Priced reasonably, the B&B rate is around £150 for two people. A larger premium room with a bath is also available for a supplement. Dog-owners can bring their well behaved pooches for an additional fee, but these are not allowed in the public rooms or restaurant. Wifi is included.

The Horseshoe has a number of special packages available, which typically include dinner, bed and breakfast. The staff at The Horseshoe are also able to offer tailored activities, such as outdoor barbecues, tours of historic sights, plus functions such as weddings and seasonal events.
