In recent years, it seems that stress has become a much bigger issue in society with it being the most common reason for employees to take time off work. Stress can influence our sleep, our relationships and our attitude towards life. It can have an impact on the decisions we make, our moods and our home life and finances. So, what can we do to reduce the effects of stress – even if we cannot eliminate the stress from our lives?

Positive vs Negative
Look for the positives in your life, be grateful for the ‘good days’, focus on what you want to achieve – your goals and your ambitions. Listen to how you talk and what you think – if everything you’re saying and thinking has a negative slant on it, how are you going to be more positive?
Talking therapies can help to you change your way of thinking. Teaching yourself mindfulness will help you to live in the here and now, going to a yoga class will help you to switch off and relax at the end of the day.
If you’re going through a difficult time, then the tarot and clairvoyant readings can give you a boost and help you to focus on the future. My partner, although not a believer in mysticism, sees value in the tarot as a way to help you focus on the things that are holding you back – the conscious interpretation of the cards creates an outlet for subconscious thoughts to emerge. In addition, having positive thoughts and aspirations for the future will help you to focus on the good things, rather than the everyday stresses in your life.

What Are the Symptoms of Stress?
The influence that stress can have on us can appear in various ways. Not only can it impact your health but also your emotions and your mental attitude. The symptoms of stress may include:
- Anxiety and lack of motivation
- Depleted energy
- Depression and feeling flat
- Tension in the neck and shoulders
- Overwhelmed by normal tasks
- Unstable thoughts and emotions
- Irritable towards others
- Problems sleeping
- Change in libido
- Unsettled stomach
- Foreboding feelings
- Increased reliance on alcohol, food or tobacco
- High blood pressure or palpitations
- Feelings of anger or impatience

Prioritise Yourself
Whether you’re a parent, a carer or just an extremely busy person, finding some time for yourself is key to combatting stress and helping you to feel more positive about your life.
Small changes such as having a relaxing bath each night, getting out for a daily walk, having a holistic or beauty treatment and delegating some of your work tasks or home chores – can have a dramatic difference on helping yourself.
Eating nutritious food, drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep and exercise, all contribute towards a healthier, happier and stronger you too. All too often we do everything for everyone else and mostly put ourselves last, not to say that we ignore others needs and become selfish – but giving ourselves downtime is imperative if you want to be more productive in your work, a happier parent, friend or partner.
Ignoring problems in finances, your home life or relationship can all have a negative impact on stress too, so get in control, communicate – and you will feel better.
