We checked into Andaz London Liverpool Street to find out what a stay there is like for a gay couple including what the hotel has to offer. Andaz covered the accommodations and dinner in Rake’s Cafe Bar.
Andaz London Liverpool Street
Andaz is a luxury lifestyle brand under the Hyatt umbrella, with each property celebrating the heritage of its location. When guests enter the lobby of Andaz London Liverpool Street, it doesn’t exclusively feel like London, but the colourful and opulent décor definitely sets a fun, luxury tone.
The hotel is located next to London Liverpool Street Station, so well connected to tube and train lines, and within walking distance of the City of London and East London. The hotel has a number of sustainability initiatives that are tracked, including use of energy efficient lighting, optimising heat reduction, low-flow water fixtures to reduce water consumption, and ensuring all takeaway items are 100% compostable. This year, we were additionally pleased to see that Andaz London Liverpool Street has a Be More You campaign running, to celebrate pride, with up to 20% off stays through to 31 August 2024.
Accommodation
After being checked in, we went straight up to our room, 526, on the 5th floor. The Andaz has three modern, good-sized lifts meaning the wait is never very long even at peak time. Our room category was a King Bed Deluxe, Fitness Equipped – this is at least 33 sqm, ours being very generous in size. As well as the very comfy king bed, the room had a Peloton bike set up, with a couple of light dumbbells and a yoga mat.
What we loved about the room was the separate bath and shower and bountiful amenities, a complimentary mini bar with non-alcoholic drinks and snacks, and Nespresso coffee machine, which we would expect as standard in a hotel of this calibre. There were plenty of sockets by the bed meaning it was easy to chart devices at night.
Wifi was free, easy to connect to and very fast – we had no problems with speed throughout the hotel.
Andaz also has a welcoming pet policy, so our room was set up with a comfy pet bed and food bowls, just in case we had brought one – though there is an extra fee for pet stays.
Dining
Breakfast food was good but service disappointed. To get to the breakfast restaurant guests are directed to the first floor and then down a flight of stairs into the ground floor 1901 Eastway brasserie. We didn’t check if there is an accessible option but assume there must be involving another set of lifts. Breakfast is laid out as a generous buffet in the middle with tables around. We appreciated the variety and a separate table of sweet treats. There are menus on the tables for a small selection of egg dishes. We placed an order for coffee, but the kitchen seemed to be having problems with all coffee orders taking about 20 minutes and ours failing to materialise at all within the hour. We also didn’t understand the setup – the roaming staff did not automatically come to newly seated tables, rather the onus is on guests to get their attention to order a tea/coffee or egg dish. We found this confusing and it would be much easier if waiters come over to a table a moment or two after a new guest has sat down to take their order as in almost all other venues for breakfast.
The Andaz has numerous dining venues, which are all accessible externally. Of these, we had dinner at Rake’s Cafe Bar. We entered internally as hotel guests, but the venues seem set up to greet and seat guests from their external doors so we had to traipse through the venue to wait in an external doorway to be greeted and seated for our booking. This could easily be solved by having a host set up at both internal and external entrances.
Once seated service was good, and we were impressed to see a ‘brat’ special menu was available – Charli XCX has truly become a global branding phenomenon. To drink we went for the von dutch cocktail (£10) mixed with midori, cointreau and lemon juice, and the mean girls matcha latte (£5). The von dutch cocktails packed a punch, and after 3 or more we would not be very demure.
To eat order a couple of starters and mains, which all arrived at once, so we had a relaxed dining experience picking at what we wanted when we wanted.
- Chicken & chorizo croquettes (£14) served with chipotle mayonnaise – these had a good balance of textures: crisp outside and soft inside with just enough chicken inside, though more chorizo wouldn’t have gone amiss.
- Crispy baby squid, homemade parsley aioli (£15) delicious and we could have easily eaten a second plate of these.
- Grilled prawns with cured lemon, a side salad and garlic butter ciabatta (£22.50) were well presented and flavourful.
- Crispy buttermilk chicken burger in a brioche bun with tomato & chipotle mayonnaise, and a side of fries (£17.50). This was well cooked and executed, definitely the highlight of the menu.
For dessert, although rather full by this point, we tried the:
- Trio of chocolate, served with a feuilletine crunch (£8) – rather than being a trio of mini chocolate desserts as the name infers, this is layered chocolate set pudding served with some crunchy chocolate morsels on the side. This was aesthetically pleasing but underwhelming in flavour.
- Cinnamon peach crème brûlée (£8), which hit the spot and had a much richer custard underneath the brûlée crust. Our only observation was the serving of fig with this (rather than peach as the name suggested).
Amenities
The Andaz London Liverpool Street does have a couple of noteworthy amenities available to all guests. One being Andaz Lounge i.e. the space around the lobby, where they host a daily complimentary wine hour Vino and Vibes, accompanied by canapés. We found this a perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine and a glass of champagne just before heading to dinner.
The other noteworthy amenity is the gym – open 24-hours and set in our unique old Egyptian temple. This is impressive for a hotel gym, with plenty of space, a wide range of modern equipment including up to 40-kilogram dumbbells, squat racks, benches, treadmills, row machines, and lots more. There’s also a steam room open 8am – 8 pm daily.
Service and overall thoughts
Throughout our stay, we had friendly service from staff who listened to us, both across reception and in the different dining venues. Our only issue, mentioned above, was the lack of coffee at breakfast. Hopefully those breakfast service hiccups were quickly resolved after our stay.
Our room was surprisingly large and we loved the porthole window with the cute view out, the separate bath and shower and bountiful bathroom amenities. The Vino and Vibes hour was a great way to relax in a social area of the hotel to see who some of the other guests are. We also loved the variety of dining options without needing to leave the hotel, and of course the impressive fitness studio.
Given all that and the proximity to Liverpool Street Station – the hotel is well connected across London – we would definitely recommend for a London stay. For the King Bed Deluxe, Fitness Equipped room, we have seen rates around £350 per night but this does fluctuate depending on availability.
