If like us at Vada Magazine, you’re planning travels across the pond, there is no better place for year-round sun than the state of California, with the thriving LGBT community of West Hollywood. An essential part of any trip is time to relax. Whilst California boasts many beaches that fulfil that criteria, those familiar with Los Angeles traffic will know that a trip to beach can feel more a day excursion than a quick jaunt across town. For us, therefore, when we visit Los Angeles, and specifically West Hollywood, we always choose a hotel with a great rooftop pool and service to maximise the couple of hours of chill between workout class, canyon hike, and drinks at The Abbey.

1 Hotel West Hollywood – 5 star
Located at the foot of the hills, 1 Hotel West Hollywood offers incredible rooftop pool views across downtown Los Angeles. The Pool Lounge, exclusively for hotel guests, offers poolside dining from sunrise to sunset. This newly opened hotel (in May 2019) uses timber, rattan, and clean white linens, with an abundance of planting to create a calming space.

Andaz West Hollywood – 4 star
Located a couple of blocks away from 1 Hotel, the Andaz boasts a very similar view across the Los Angeles area. The colour of the pool against the orange colours of some soft furnishings is reminiscent of a David Hockney pool picture. Cabanas are available to hire, and food is available from late morning to early evening.

Chamberlain West Hollywood – 4 star
Located just off Santa Monica Boulevard, the heated rooftop pool and terrace at the Chamberlain hotel offers 360-degree views of West Hollywood. Large scale graphic patterns, with neutral colours and vibrant green accents provide a background for a relaxing retreat. Private cabanas are available to hire, and the pool is fully accessible.

La Peer Hotel – 5 star
La Peer Hotel, a Kimpton property, is set just off Santa Monica Boulevard, a stone’s throw from the infamous The Abbey bar. The pool is the exception of the list, in that it does not offer any views, rather La Peer’s pool offers enclosed privacy, surrounded by olive trees as a peaceful place to unwind.

Le Parc Suite Hotel – 4 star
Le Parc Suite hotel located close to Melrose Avenue (great for boutique shopping), has a skydeck that includes a heated pool and cabanas to rent. The accessible pool is on the small side (don’t expect to be able to do laps), but the view more than makes up for the size.

Mondrian Los Angeles – 4 star
Located on Sunset Boulevard, almost next door to 1 Hotel, the 4 star Mondrian hotel combines a mix of futuristic and organic interior design. The Skybar pool offers sunbathers panoramic city views and chilled drinks. For those wanting to party in the evening, the Skybar pool transforms to host DJ sets. Lounger reservation is essential.

Montrose West Hollywood – 4 star
The Montrose West Hollywood offers ‘suite style with a Hollywood vibe’. The refurbished rooftop pool deck has stunning views of the West Hollywood skyline. There is plenty of seating, and Cabanas available for hire. Hotel guests also have complimentary access to the adjacent rooftop tennis court. Tonic Rooftop Bar provides guests with an al fresco lunch, and cocktails by the pool.

Petit Ermitage – 4 star
The 4 start Petit Ermitage is a hotel out of the ordinary. Aimed at the luxury fantasist, Petit Ermitage has many unique and unusual offerings, such as a morning breakfast room service where guests are woken up by a small orchestra performing in your room. On the rooftop, the heated saltwater pool is open 24 hours, and topless nudity is to be expected. Petit Ermitage is also a 3 minute walk to Flaming Saddles and Micky’s bar.

The London West Hollywood – 5 star
The London West Hollywood is, as to be expected, themed around the greatest capital city (we have to say that, we are UK-based at Vada). It’s not surprising The London was rated number 1 in West Hollywood with the hotel’s English bulldogs Winston and Churchill welcoming guests, an automated wine dispenser in every suite. The rooftop pool is just long enough to do a brief length, and there is plenty of seating and cabanas available for hire, not forgetting the panoramic views across Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.
