With the advent of same sex marriages also came the advent of the LGBT honeymoon. Well, in recognition of that fact, here’s our top six healthy LGBT honeymoon destinations!
NEW ZEALAND: ARO HA WELLNESS RETREAT
If you can’t get enough of the great outdoors, then follow in the footsteps of Peter Jackson and try New Zealand. NZ’s fabulous Aro Ha Wellness Retreat is well located to offer the best of the local scenery, while being kitted out to offer all the perks you want when on your honeymoon. With its beautiful mountain peaks, glittering lakes and acres of sub-alpine terrain, the location of Aro Ha Wellness Retreat makes for a great combination of adventure and luxury. You can enjoy hikes to world heritage sites, yoga overlooking Lake Wakatipu, and functional strength training in eco-friendly studios. Or you can imagine yourself battling an orc army with your best elfin sword – your choice.
CRETE: BLUE PALACE
The Greek island of Crete is a popular gay-friendly destination for newlyweds – and is drenched in the Mediterranean romance of the classical world. Though the days of handsome, tanned men in togas and bacchanalian feasts in the name of the gods are over, you can still enjoy a little Greek magic of your own. The striking Elounda coastline at the Blue Palace resort offers a secluded beach overlooking the Gulf. The resort’s beachside spa has a couple’s suite with signature treatments. The more active honeymooners can also make day trips to the nearby villages, with all the trinkets and trades on offer there, or sample the top-notch cuisine on offer at one of the resort’s numerous five-star restaurants.
IBIZA: 38 DEGREES NORTH AGUAS DE IBIZA
Ibiza was obviously going to make our list – but with 38 Degrees North Aguas de Ibiza, you’ll see an altogether different side to the party island. This resort is in the quieter north of the island, and offers daily fitness activities including mountain biking and hiking. Guests can also enjoy views of the exquisite coastline, or rebalance with rooftop yoga classes, Pilates, Turkish baths and spa massages. Alternatively, guests can take a short walk to the nearby Santa Eulària – famed for its foodie delights! If one of you likes quiet nights in and the other likes to party, you could even book half your honeymoon in the party-centric Old Town, and then spend the rest here to recharge your batteries. Win-win, right?
SOUTH AFRICA: KARKLOOF SAFARI SPA
This is an all-inclusive luxury safari – which brings the breathtaking beauty of South Africa’s natural realm right to your door. Fans of The Lion King may be disappointed that they won’t find talking cartoon animals – or songs by Elton John – but the proximity to sub-Saharan wilderness is more than enough to make up for it. While at the spa, you can enjoy unlimited spa treatments and nutritious cuisine. The resort specialises in offering an intimate and personalised service in a sensuous setting. Guests can enjoy the safari, take hikes with gorgeous sights or go fishing together. The spa has a range of hydrotherapy facilities, massages and wraps available.
ITALY: ADLER THERMAE
Italy is known for its oozing romance – and, while less homoerotic than Greece, retains its place as one of the love capitals of the world. At Adler Thermae you can enjoy the Tuscan countryside and explore the heart of Tuscany’s Val d’Orcia natural park. But Italy is also justly famous for its booze – and Adler Thermae doesn’t disappoint. Travellers can also taste local wines before relaxing side-by-side with a rejuvenating wine-infused spa treatment. The picaresque green hills are perfect for peaceful hikes, healthy bike rides and Nordic walking classes. Meanwhile, the resort offers a host of complimentary fitness classes, such as TRX, which guests can enjoy.
PORTUGAL: PENHA LONGA
If you like sports like golf or tennis, this historical retreat on the Estoril coastline of Portugal makes a great choice. With a history dating back to the 14th century, the resort has fabulous gardens and lakes. There are three championship courses at the resort, plus private or group tennis lessons, and a variety of holistic treatments at the spa. Portugal offers a tasteful, sun-drenched experience, and there’s plenty of local culture to absorb for the keen traveller too.
