Coming Up: Icy Gays presents GenderF**k

Adrian Everett

Icy Gays started life at the ICA (you see what they did there) as off-site nights produced by Vogue Fabrics owner and fashion designer, Lyall Hakaraia. Having put on nights in locations from Glastonbury to New Zealand, the next stop for Icy Gays is the Barbican in London, as part of a series of events to coincide with The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition.

Icy Gays presents GenderF**k brings to the Barbican some of the unusual aspects of queer performance, fashion and drag that continue to draw Jean Paul Gaultier to London for inspiration. There’s an entire horde of big names involved in the night, including Dalston regular A Man to Pet, Ruth Less the winner of Miss Twin Peaks 2013 and drag pensioner superstar Jeannie Dee.

However, what sparked my interest in GenderF**k was seeing Planningtorock on the line up. Real name Jam Rostron (she changed her named from Janine to have a genderless name), Planningtorock came to my attention in 2011 with the sullen distorted vocals on her second studio album, W. Her presentation matched the vocals with a facial prosthetic vaguely reminiscent of the Elephant Man. She returned with a new album All Love’s Legal last year, with tracks entitled ‘Misogyny Drop Dead’ and ‘Patriarchy Over & Out’, Rostron certainly doesn’t mince her words when it comes to her political stance.

GenderF**k will also feature a new light installation from ground breaking international artist Ben Kreukniet and film maker Sharna Osborne will be presenting a selection of fashion films from East London based designers, such as Chris Raeburn, Sibling, Christian Cowan-Sanluis, CLM/Chris Sweeney and Meadham Kirchhoff.

Princess Julia will be offering musical entertainment alongside DJ sets from East London fashion stalwart The Lovely Jonjo, Cozette McCreery and Love magazine editor Jack Sunnucks.

Icy Gays presents GenderF**k will be in the Barbican Garden Room & Conservatory on Saturday 7 June at 7pm. Details and tickets for the event can be found on the Barbican website.

Go dressed to impress!
