In a groundbreaking State of the Union Address, President Obama made history on 20 January 2015. While it is no surprise that President Obama has made many advancements for the rights of the LGBT+ community, no president in the history of the United States has ever used the words ‘transgender’ or ‘bisexual’ in public.

In the final moments of his speech President Obama states that Americans now ‘condemn the persecution of women, or religious minorities, or people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender’. President Obama also referenced gay marriage as a ‘story of freedom across our country’ and a ‘civil right’ worthy of praise.
