Keith Gaillard, a teenager from Tampa, Florida, turned himself in on Wednesday after a warrant was issued for his arrest in the India Clarke murder case.
India Clarke, a transgender woman, was found dead in Tampa on 21 July near University Area Community Center. An autopsy showed that Clarke had died from gunshot wounds. She was 25 years old.
Officials say that Gaillard’s DNA was found under Clarke’s fingernails, and have also reported finding a condom with Gaillard’s DNA inside Clarke’s car, which was found near the body.
Gaillard is currently being held on $275,000 (€249,772.47) bail and is also a primary suspect in the death of Tyrone Davis, 46, another member of the LGBT+ community who was shot to death this past Sunday.
Prosecutors had asked the judge not to grant Gaillard bond, saying, ‘This defendant is the primary suspect in a second homicide that we are going to be able to show was committed with the same firearm. This defendant is an extreme danger to the community.’
It is not yet known if Gaillard has obtained legal counsel.
Clarke is the 16th transgender person murdered in the United States this year, in what some have called an epidemic of transphobic violence.
