On Monday 7 July, Ban Ki-moon of the United Nations announced the amended policies of the core UN body which now recognizes same-sex marriages of staffers.
Although enacted on 26 June, the policy was only made public knowledge this week. It states that, regardless of the law in one’s home-nation, LGBT+ staff of the UN can be married. This amended provision does not, however, affect separate agencies within the UN – such as UNESCO and UNICEF.
Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN, was quoted as saying, ‘This is a step forward that many of the staffers at the United Nations had been seeking for some time.’
