Black trans drag performer Chyna Gibson (known by the stage name Chyna Doll Dupree) was shot in the street in New Orleans yesterday, Saturday 25 February.

At about 8.30pm, Gibson was shot on the 4300 block of Downman Road, where she died at the scene.

A family member, who chose to remain anonymous but who identified herself as Gibson’s aunt, said, ‘She didn’t do nothing to nobody.’

She also described her niece as ‘A very loving person.’

Gibson was visiting New Orleans, her birthplace, from California, her new home. Neighbours claim they heard 8-10 shots being fired outside the Bella Plaza shopping centre.

TransGriot pointed out that men have recently been spotted harassing trans people in the city:

‘What also has me upset about hearing about this latest murder just down I-10 east is that last month a YouTube video surfaced of two cisgender males harassing and hunting trans women in the New Orleans area.’

The website also lists details for contacting the investigating officer and CrimeStoppers.
