It’s been a while since I’ve written a Singles You Missed This Week, so I wanted to make sure I gave you guys one before too much time went by. And what better time is there to pop up than this one (I mean, it’s not every week that we get new music from the one and only Janet Jackson)? But that’s enough from me. Let’s get started shall we?
The Internet ft. Kaytranada – Girl
After the band’s 2013 release Feel Good, they returned with the video for their first single off Ego Death, titled ‘Girl’. This time, the band strays from the more traditional soul sounds of Feel Good for a more house-influenced sound courtesy of Kaytranada.
Fortunately, whether Syd the Kid is singing over homegrown instrumentation from her bandmates or the smooth electronic vibes of Kaytranada, the soul in her voice remains intact. Whether you’re a long time fan of The Internet or a new listener, I am sure this a song you’ll enjoy.
Meghan Trainor ft. John Legend – Like I’m Gonna Lose You
Meghan Trainor released a new single with John Legend earlier this week. Taking influences from Trainor’s Nashville roots, fifties pop and modern R&B, ‘Like I’m Gonna Lose You’ is an infectious slow song that will make you feel that it was made for you to make moments you’ll savor, which funnily enough, goes right along with the song’s lyrics.
Meghan is right in her element and although John Legend is in slightly different territory with the country influences, he doesn’t miss a beat. Well, it seems like Trainor has done it again.
Rest assured that this song is going to dominate the radio airwaves within the next few months the same way ‘All About That Bass’ did.
Janet Jackson – No Sleeep
Yes, you read that last name correctly: THE Janet Jackson. Ever since she released a trailer last month promising fans new music, everyone has waited anxiously to see when she was going to release it.
Six days ago, listeners were able to get a snippet of a song called ‘No Sleeep’, and on Tuesday we got the finished product.
Starting with thunder and rain, a signature element of Janet’s sex songs, Jackson gives us sensual, airy vocals over a grown-up and sexy mid-tempo beat.
As the song’s title suggests, the song is about a night of love-making after being away, with Jackson warning her husband to get ready ‘because she’s gon’ be the queen of insomnia’.
Sensual and dance-friendly, this song serves as the perfect re-introduction for Janet Jackson, whose last studio album was seven years ago. She is supposed to go on tour later this summer, but here’s to hoping we won’t have to wait too long for more new material.
Well, that’s it for this edition of Singles You Missed This Week. What new music have you been listening to this week? Have you discovered any new artists? Feel free to comment and let me and the Vada Team know.
