US singer and songwriter Kishi Bashi will release his third solo studio album, Sonderlust, on 16 September. His first two albums received fab reviews and that may in part be down to the fact he can play an endless list of instruments (this man is an in demand violinist). New album Sonderlust spans multiple genres throughout its 10 tracks.
If you’re new to Kishi Bashi, maybe listen to single “Say Yeah” to weigh up whether it’s for you. I certainly found it …interesting. Let’s just say it reminded me of a softened version of “Pocket Monster” by Henry Homesweet with the occasional flicker of Kate Bush, crossed with the ghost from the lighthouse episode of the Moomins. Very quirky. But everybody kind of likes quirky.
“Sonder” means, apparently, “The realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own…an epic story that continues invisibly around you, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed…in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway.”
Kishi Bashi will perform songs from Sonderlust live this autumn, with a major 29-date North American tour that kicks off in late September, visiting the likes of New York, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, Toronto, Vancouver and many more.
