The BBC has tried several times to capture the brilliance of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. It’s not an easy series to adapt, because the books certainly aren’t the most linear, and they were written in a rush. But the character of Dirk Gently himself is well realised, and that’s presumably where the BBC will start with this next iteration.
There was previously a TV show with Stephen Mangan, which was funny, but lacked most of the science fiction, fantasy and surreal tone of the books. There was a superb radio series, starring Harry Enfield as the titular half-arsed conman-turned-hero, and adapted by the godfather of radio drama, Dirk Maggs.
This time, though, it seems BBC America is going for for a younger, sexier Dirk Gently. It looks interesting, but it doesn’t look anything like Douglas Adams’ books (the radio series was the version that stuck closest to the source material). The jury’s out on this one, but I’m sure we’ll all watch it anyway just to see…
