We were invited to try out NYnLON, a New York-meets-London restaurant, in The Hyatt Regency London Blackfriars hotel. Here’s what we thought.

NYnLON restaurant

NYnLON, pronounced ‘nylon’ and short for “New York & London” can be discovered to the right as you enter the Hyatt Regency Blackfriars Hotel. Set slightly above street level and with a single small revolving door into the hotel, it’s difficult to spot this from the outside but easy from the inside.

The interior is smart, clad in neutral tones, plenty of wood and brass finishes throughout. We also noted there are plenty of power sockets at tables around the edge of the venue meaning, particularly for hotel guests, it is easy to charge your devices while eating.

The menu

The menu brings together comfort food from New York and London. What we also noticed is that as a result, dishes are from different eras, and definitely a trip down memory lane – one of our starters was popular in the late 80s and a cocktail in the 90s.

To start we had the NYnLON Prawn Cocktail (£15) – with iceberg lettuce, Marie Rose sauce, avocado, and a generous portion of prawns. This was served exactly as we remembered it from 30+ years ago. Keeping with seafood, our other starter was a more modern Bourbon-cured Salmon (£13.50) served with whipped horseradish, fennel and mixed crackers – a colourful and light start to the meal service.

Main courses were both meat-centric. We opted for the Sugar pit pork chop (£24.50) with slaw and a side of seasoned fries (£5.50), and the 35 day dry-aged Rib-Eye (10 oz) steak (£38) including fries. The steak was cooked as requested, but the Sugar pit pork was the real treat here, originally hailing from a bit further than New York we suspect, this pork was tender, sticky, sweet, and moreish.

Desserts were a mixed affair. We selected a Chocolate hazelnut Sundae with coconut ice cream (£8.95). This really disappointed – a sundae should be over the top and indulgent, invoking childhood ideals of eyes bigger than your stomach. This Sundae, whilst had great taste didn’t meet the brief. Conversely, the Deep Filled Apple Crumble (£9.75) served with salted caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream was presented well in its own mini pie dish, so already setting itself up for success. This was giving top FOMO – fear of missing out – from the dessert menu.

To drink we opted for cocktails (all £14), in the form of a Bramble, and the iconic Cosmopolitan. This really hit the spot and again brought back memories when we used to drink these more frequently. Although we didn’t try it, NYnLON has also recently launched Wine Happy Hour: two glasses of selected red or white wine for £15, available daily from 4 PM – 6 PM.

The service

A little like the desserts, the service was a little mixed, we received a friendly welcome and were seated promptly but then asked about 5 minutes later to re-provide our reservation details. There were some unnecessary waits, for example the cocktails took about 20 minutes to arrive despite no other visible orders in front of us. We got the impression that staff seemed weren’t working as coherent team, which could easily be resolved.

Overall thoughts

NYnLON has an interesting menu concept (comfort foods from London and New York) and one that theoretically should be popular with many diners, but on the Friday night we visited the restaurant was particularly quiet with a small eclectic mix of hotel guests. If NYnLON can make itself more visible and easily accessible to those outside of the Hyatt Regency Blackfriars Hotel, there is a lot of potential, particularly for those who want to re-live comfort foods and drinks that aren’t in fashion in London at the moment.

Our meal would have cost a little over £70 per person for three courses and a cocktail, not including service. We recommend the Prawn Cocktail, Sugar pit pork chop, and the Deep Filled Apple Crumble.

NYnLON is located inside the Hyatt Regency Blackfriars Hotel, 19 New Bridge St, London EC4V 6DB
