Wednesday 14 September would have been Amy Winehouse’s 33rd birthday. Amy made waves with the cool swagger of Frank, which coupled contemporary jazz with cheeky (often bawdy) lyrics. She followed up this complex but sometimes underrated album with the smoother and darker Back to Black, which took the sound of 60s girl groups and doused it in angst. The album was luxurious, tortured and haunting – and came to symbolise the singer’s troubled life as the media, the industry and her own demons pushed her to the limit.
