Bluebird is one of Chelsea’s most infamous restaurants, and has transformed its spaces for the winter with a Narnia theme including a white winter wonderland for its outdoor spaces and cabins. We sent Vada food writer Gideon Schneider to find out more about the winter transformation.
Bluebird, on Chelsea’s King’s Road, underwent a beautiful renovation in 2016 at the hands of Sagrada, the interior designers of The Arts Club. The indoor restaurant mixes exposed steel beams, trees, a large fish tank complete with yellow submarine and intimate booths for private dining. This Christmas, the restaurant has transformed its outdoor cobbled courtyard into a Narnia wonderland, with three heated wooden chalets, blue fairy lights adorning the bar and a comfort menu of fondue, apple pie and boozy hot chocolate on offer. It’s not clear how these menu items all connect with the theme of Narnia, but gorging when tipsy on hot chocolate, its doubtful this matters much.
This week as a thank you to its customers, Bluebird hosted an evening of free flowing mulled wine and alcohol, fresh roasted chestnuts, addictively tasty lobster filled arancini and a table overloaded with brandy soaked mince pies and gingerbread men. Fire eaters and a DJ kept the atmosphere animated, while the friendly and good humoured bar staff kept glasses topped up and stomachs filled with various finger foods.
Whilst less convinced that the space had any resemblance to C.S Lewis’ descriptions of Narnia, Bluebird’s winter theme, ample heating and well stocked bar would be a fun place to spend an evening catching up with friends after work. The venue itself is about a mile from Sloane Square station, so making the trip out just for the outdoor bar is probably only something you would do if you’re a local. However, if you’re planning on combining that with a meal in the well-regarded restaurant, it would certainly be worth the journey from outside SW3.
Bluebird Chelsea is located at 250 King’s Road, London, SW3 5UU
