A vehicle has driven into a crowd during Berlin’s annual Pride event on Saturday, killing one person and injuring at least 15 others, according to police.
Emergency services were called to Tiergarten park, near the Brandenburg Gate in the German capital, after reports of a vehicle hitting the crowd at speed. A major incident was subsequently declared, and an intensive police manhunt for suspects is currently under way.
Local police said in a statement that several people were severely injured, with some of them suffering life-threatening injuries. One person is reported to have died.
Images being shared on social media appear to show injured people lying on the ground, as well as a significant number of emergency service vehicles at the scene of the incident. Polizei Berlin are appealing to witnesses to send any images or videos of the incident, as a means of assisting authorities with their investigations.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has described the incident as a “horrific act” and provided assurances that it will be fully investigated. Meanwhile, the mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, has said that this is “an attack on our free and open-minded society” in a post on X.
Earlier on Saturday, crowds had gathered to celebrate Berlin’s annual Christopher Street Day, one of Europe’s biggest LGBTQ+ events. Hundreds of thousands of people attended festivities in the city, which included a parade of almost 80 floats that ended near the park, before a series of evening events.
Christopher Street Day attracts people from across the world. First held in West Berlin in 1979, a decade before the fall of the Berlin Wall, it has since evolved from a small LGBTQ+ demonstration to a major fixture in Berlin’s cultural and political calendar.
Pride celebrations in Berlin this year were cut tragically short.
