So here it is: 20 years after the first film hit the big screen, we have the first trailer for Trainspotting 2. Back at the helm, 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle has brought together the first film’s celebrated core cast for this adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s sequel to Trainspotting (although the book was called Porno and not Trainspotting 2).
Here we see the reunited heroes (and anti-heroes): Renton (Ewan McGregor), Spud (Ewan Bremner), Sick Boy (Jonny Lee Miller), Begbie (Robert Carlyle) and Diane (Kelly Macdonald). Last time we saw them, Renton and Spud had legged it with a bundle of cash, leaving Begbie without a penny from the sale of heroin the three of them had planned together.
Incorporating elements that weren’t in the original book, Porno is a direct sequel to the film rather than the book it was based on. It follows the dodgy group of friends as they enter the grimy world of pornography. It’s not currently known, however, how alike the film and Porno will be.
Apparently, one of the reasons for the delayed sequel was a reported fall-out between Boyle and McGregor, whic has presumably now been resolved. Another old friend returning for the film is cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, who partnered with Boyle on Slumdog Millionaire, which went on to win an Oscar.
Expect Trainspotting 2 in cineams from 27 January 2017.
